Top Three Tooth Pain Causes and Remedies

Tooth pain can be incredibly overwhelming. It can come in the form of sharp pain, throbbing sensation in the gums, and sensitivity to hot and cold foods. Regardless of how it presents itself, tooth pain has the tendency to be very disruptive.

Most individuals who experience a tooth ache are caught by surprise when it first happens. Their teeth were seemingly fine and suddenly took a turn for the worse overnight. These unexpected oral pains send many patients directly to the dentist right away. If you are in those shoes right now, we want you to know that it will be okay. We also understand that you might have some questions about what is going on with your oral health. While we are unable to tell you for sure what is causing your pain until we examine you, we wanted to highlight below the top three tooth pain causes and some remedies that might help you.

Cavity/ Tooth Decay

The number one cause of tooth pain in most patients is dental cavities. The good news is that cavities can be easily avoided by practicing good oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day will remove all the undesired food bits and bacteria in the teeth. When good oral hygiene is not practiced, the bad bacteria eats away at the teeth and creates cavities.

Cavities start off really small. This is why they are often missed during their initial stages. They begin to create issues such as tooth aches as they get larger in size. If you are at this stage, please book an appointment right away with our team. Untreated cavities have the potential of infecting the tooth and even leading to tooth loss.

Once you have booked your appointment, you can focus on relieving the pain until you are in the office. One way to do this is by applying a salt water rinse. You can make your salt water rinse by mixing 8 ounces of warm water with half teaspoon of salt. Please make sure that the water is warm and not hot. You can do this every couple of hours if it is helpful.

Gum Disease

Gum disease is much more common than we would like it to be. In fact, three quarters of Americans suffer from gum disease by the time they are 35. This is an upsetting statistic considering that gum disease can usually be avoided through proper oral hygiene.

Gum disease is the result of plaque buildup. The bad bacteria residing in the mouth from lack of proper dental hygiene will eventually cause the gums to become inflamed. This means that the gums can turn red, bleed, or swell. Unfortunately, some patients experience tooth loss from leaving gum disease untreated. Tooth pain can be an indicator of advanced gum disease. Please book an appointment right away to get examined.

You may be able to soothe your tooth ache by using a mouthwash or using a salt water rinse. This is not a solution to the problem but it might help ease the pain while you wait for your appointment.

Abscessed Tooth

An abscessed tooth can be severely painful. This is the result of an infection in the tooth reaching the root tip or around the root. This can happen when a cavity has gone left untreated or after the tooth is hit by an object such as a crown. It can also occur from grinding the teeth. Some indications of an abscessed tooth include extreme pain, gum swelling, redness of the gums, throbbing pain.

If you believe you are suffering from an abscessed tooth, the first step is to book an appointment right away. In the meantime, you can use coconut oil to alleviate the pain. You can massage coconut oil on the spot that hurts. Another option would be to swish a small spoonful of coconut oil around the mouth. You can try doing this for two minutes to see if it helps.

These are the three most common reasons for toothache. However, these are not the only dental instances which would cause tooth pain. Tooth pain can also be due to wisdom teeth, injury or trauma, teeth grinding, and an abnormal bite. It is difficult to understand the underlying issue of tooth pain unless the patient is examined by a dentist.

If you are experiencing toothache, please do not wait for it to get better without being proactive. In most instances, it will get worse if untreated. Our team is here to support you and help you return to your normal self without the pain. Please contact us right away for an appointment.
