How to Care for Your Teeth When You Have Invisalign

Invisalign has revolutionized teeth straightening, offering a discreet and convenient alternative to traditional braces.  Invisalign aligners are a fantastic option that require optimal oral hygiene during its course of action.  Why? These aligners can trap food particles and bacteria against your teeth, increasing the risk of cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Thankfully you only need to implement a few simple adjustments to your routine to keep your teeth healthy and sparkling throughout your Invisalign journey.

1. Brush After Every Meal (and Snack!):

This is non-negotiable step.  Every time you eat or drink anything other than plain water, you need to brush your teeth before putting your aligners back in.  Food particles that get stuck between your teeth and the aligners create a breeding ground for bacteria. You should have a travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste with you to brush on the go.  Don’t forget to brush your tongue too!

2. Flossing is Your Friend (Even More So Now):

Flossing daily is essential for everyone, but it becomes even more critical with Invisalign.  Food can easily get trapped between your teeth, where your aligners can’t reach.  Flossing helps remove this debris and prevents plaque buildup.  Consider using floss threaders or interdental brushes to make it easier to clean around your teeth, especially if you have any attachments on your teeth.

3. Cleaning Your Aligners is Key:

Your aligners need regular cleaning just like your teeth.  Bacteria can accumulate on them and that can lead to unpleasant odors and potential oral health issues.  Clean your aligners every time you brush your teeth.  You can use a soft-bristled toothbrush and some mild soap or denture cleaner.  Avoid using toothpaste on your aligners, as it can be abrasive.  Soaking them in a retainer cleaner solution a few times a week is also a good idea.

4. Rinse Your Mouth Before Reinserting Aligners:

It’s a good practice to rinse your mouth thoroughly with water or mouthwash before putting your aligners back. This applies even if you have just brushed your teeth. This helps remove any remaining food particles or bacteria.

5. Watch What You Eat and Drink:

While you can technically eat anything with Invisalign, there are some things you should avoid or limit.  Sticky foods can easily get stuck in your aligners and be difficult to clean.  Hard foods can potentially damage your aligners.  It’s best to remove your aligners when consuming anything other than plain water.

6. Regular Checkups with Your Dentist:

Don’t skip your regular dental checkups! It is important to monitor your oral health and address any potential issues early on.  These are also opportunities for you to  receive personalized advice on how to best care for your teeth and aligners.

7. Don’t Forget Your Retainers:

Once your Invisalign treatment is complete, you’ll need to wear retainers to maintain your new smile.  Just like your aligners, your retainers need to be cleaned regularly.  Follow your orthodontist’s instructions regarding retainer wear and care.

8. Be Patient and Consistent:

Maintaining good oral hygiene with Invisalign requires dedication and consistency.  Make these habits part of your daily routine, and you’ll be well on your way to a healthy and beautiful smile.

Caring for your teeth with Invisalign involves a few extra steps, but they’re well worth the effort. By prioritizing brushing, flossing, cleaning your aligners, and maintaining regular dental checkups, you can ensure a successful Invisalign treatment and a healthy, radiant smile for years to come.  If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to contact us.
